Around The Club
Chinatown hints at the Singapore of yesteryear. Easily accessible by foot (from the club boutique hotel by harry’s hospitality), find your way to Pagoda Street – a stone’s throw away from Chinatown Mrt. This street has its fair share of touts and tourist traps, but make a beeline for the Chinatown Heritage Centre (48 Pagoda Street, Singapore 059207). The site houses a wealth of memories and interesting stories about the humble beginnings of Singapore’s early forefathers, with guided tours available by the hour.
After a lesson in the rich history of Chinatown, continue down pagoda street toward Sri Mariamman Temple (244 South Bridge, Singapore 058793), Singapore’s oldest hindu temple. Due to its architectural and historical significance, the temple has been gazetted a national monument and is a major tourist attraction.
A short walk away from Sri Mariamman Temple stands the über cool Red Dot Museum (28 Maxwell Road). Its fire engine red façade is unmistakable, and within the building lies an exclusive exhibition venue for products and brands that showcase their design excellence. Check out Maad (www.maad.sg) – a monthly, two-day extravaganza at the museum, showcasing crafts and arts from local artists and designers. For a quick respite from the sunny weather, Maxwell Food Centre along Maxwell Road offers a plethora of local food and drink options.
Opposite the road from maxwell food centre is Amoy Street, home to an assortment of interior design shops and creative agencies. Standouts include Strangelets (87 Amoy Street), which is a quirky lifestyle store selling designer goods sourced from all over the world. Around the corner lies Thien Hock Kheng Temple (158 Telok Ayer Street), one of the oldest and most important Hokkien temples in Singapore. Its name means "temple of heavenly bliss," and must surely be a stop for all those seeking happiness in their lives.
A "heaven" of quite a different kind is Bar Sa Vanh (49 Club Street), which literally means "heaven" in Laotian, and whose interior is decorated to look like the opium den it once was. It is the first bar to open on Club Street and has since heralded a new wave in Singaporean bar culture.
Take a leisurely stroll down club street toward Books Sctually (86 Club Street), an independent bookshop and publisher specialising in literature. The shop stocks a wide variety of books, magazines, stationery and lifestyle products in every nook and cranny of its charming little space. A few doors down, revisit happy childhood memories at Woods In The Books (58 Club Street), a delightful haven for picture books both kids and grown-ups will love. The immaculately decorated shop is stocked with a good range of classic and new picture books, comics and graphic novels.
Adjacent to Club Street is the hippest and most happening street in this part of town – Ann Siang Hill. Fuel up with your coffee (or sake) fix at Shots (8a Ann Siang Hill) and a slice of cake at K.Ki (7 Ann Siang Hill), purveyor of fine french-japanese cakes and pastries served fresh daily (except monday is the baker’s day off). Sharing the same retail space is The Little Drom Store (7 Ann Siang Hill), an indie publisher and gallery shop that houses a variety of vintage items and handmade crafty objects. Want to pick up a nostalgic gift or two? Head to Trolley (88 Club St) for a funky selection.
Some of the best in indie design is found along this Ann Siang stretch. Shops include Scandinavian concept store Style:Nordic (39 Ann Siang Road) and home of classic British fashion Fred Perry (19 Ann Siang Hill).
For even more retail therapy, Egg3 (33 Erskine Road), which is located around the corner from Ann Siang Hill, houses an eclectic mix of fashion, jewellery, home accessories and innovative gift items. Visit Pollen (33 Erskine Road) to appreciate the most eccentric blooms in Singapore. Finish off your busy day out with dinner at the club boutique hotel by harry’s hospitality (28 Ann Siang Road) and give yourself a pat on the back for this enriching experience – all in a day’s work.
