Be it in the small details or bold statement furnishings, the story of Singapore’s colonial beginnings and Chinatown’s colourful past is told in a tongue-in-cheek tone from lobby to room. The character-filled boutique hotel offers the modern, discerning traveller a respite from the obvious and overstated, and will especially appeal to those who truly wish to experience and appreciate the city they’re in.
An excellent venue to rest, play and work, the club boutique hotel by harry’s hospitality also offers an informal and casual space in the breezy ying yang rooftop bar.
the club boutique hotel by harry’s hospitality is jointly designed by award-winning ministry of design and home-grown Jane Yeo design consultants. Paying quirky homage to Singapore’s colonial beginnings and the rich Chinese heritage of Ann Siang hill. The collaboration results in a stylish pairing of east and west, monochrome and colour and minimalist and oriental.
Guests are flown from lobby to room by a flock of messenger birds bearing directions, resonating with a playful theme of friendly ‘messengers’, which is loosely based on the location’s popularity as a remittance centre for early Chinese immigrants. The theme recurs in calligraphy-style artwork adorning the bedroom walls, featuring a series of animals from humming birds, squirrels, frogs, carp, mice –inspired by ministry of design and individually hand painted by local artist, Wyn-Lyn Tan.
Other nostalgia-inspiring and conversation-starting pieces include an oversized statue of Sir Stamford Raffles with his head literally in the clouds – representing his grand plans for colonial Singapore. A series of historic wood carvings splashed in white provide visual provocation as guests enter the hotel lounge. Recreated traditional terrazzo flooring and antique pendant lamps also tell the story of the building’s legacy and the area’s heritage.
Evoking a sense of accessible elegance and modern authenticity, the club boutique hotel by harry’s hospitality connects the modern traveller with the heritage of the location in an engaging and thoughtful manner, without harping on the irrelevant past.
